News & Advice
Spring is in the Air!
Spring in Terre Haute is the time of year
when the winter grays begin to fade and the
springtime greens return. The melted ice
and snow reveal a battered landscape
littered with debris and in need of a
gardener’s helping hand. With this beautiful
and enjoyable season comes the burden of
performing the springtime chores.
All leaves, branches, and dead plants that
have collected on your lawn and in your
flowerbeds need removed to allow room for
the spring flowers and the grass to grow
unchallenged.
Mulch tends to fade and requires a new top
dressing in the spring to provide an equally
impressive canvas for your plants to grow
on. The new mulch also aids in the ongoing
battle with weeds and increases soil
moisture retention for nearby plants. It is
important to start cleaning and mulching the
landscape as soon as the weather will allow
because the work becomes more difficult to
accomplish and more harmful to the plants
once the new growth emerges.
Spring and fall are the most crucial times to
fertilize your lawn. Why not start out on the
right foot by implementing a fertilizing
program this spring? Giving your grass the
necessary nutrients to grow and look
healthy also gives your grass the strength to
fend off encroaching weeds and to fill in
bare spots in the lawn.

Lawn mowing in Terre Haute generally starts
in April and ends in November, but the
frequency of mowing will vary based on
current weather conditions. Some months
may require more frequent mowing than
others due to high rainfall amounts or less
frequent due to drought.
Cutting grass shorter than the
recommended height will hurt your grass
and gives weeds room to take over. The
height of your grass directly affects the
depth of the grass roots and the ability to
compete with invading weeds. Taller grass
has deep roots needed to reach water on
those dry summer days and it blocks out
sunlight for neighboring weeds. Short grass
has shallow roots that cannot reach water
and will suffer when hot, dry summer days
arrive, making the grass an easy target for
invading weeds. 3-4 inches is usually ideal
for most lawns. It is recommended that you
have your lawn cut at least once per week
with sharp blades to keep it looking its best.
When mowing your lawn, try not to remove
more than 1/3 of the height of your grass at
a time. By removing more than 1/3 of the
grass blade, or scalping, the grass takes its
energy away from building healthy roots to
quickly try to grow back the damaged
blades. This will result in a less healthy,
less drought tolerant plant. It’s best to cut
your lawn before it gets too tall and keep it
cut frequently.
Increase curb appeal
Renew garden beds by pruning overgrowth,
pulling weeds, planting flowers, and installing
new mulch. Make sure the boarder of the
bed is clean and any stones or bricks are in
place as they should be. If your border is
old or outdated consider upgrading to a new
stone, brick, or rock edge. Add plants that
will turn heads. A pop of color goes a long
way to give your property the curb appeal
you deserve.
